Interview With Mr. Ahmed Al Ghurair
April 14, 2010

The UAE Ship Owners Association has recently changed his name into UAE Shipping Association, creating an intake for many potential new members. Mr. Al Ghurair, Chairman of the Association, is explaining in this interview the reasons behind this change and the new course the organization is taking following this change.

The UAE Ship Owners association, active since 2007, has recently decided to change its name to UAE Shipping Association thus opening the doors to a much larger potential numbers of members. Was the reason for that the current credit crunch or which other motives prevailed?

Taking a leaf out of the other Shipping associations worldwide, the UAE Ship Owners Association has decided to consolidate its reach within the shipping community in UAE. The decision for the name change was primarily to unite the Marine industry in the UAE and not due to the credit crunch.

The UAE Ship Owners Association (UAESOA) has been established “to promote the interests of Ship Owners based in and operating from the UAE, whilst also providing a common platform for interaction within the rest of the Industry.” How will this mission change, how will the association present the interest of each industry within the shipping community?

The Mission Statement of the Association is now “The UAE Shipping Association (UAESA) shall promote the interests of the Shipping community based in and operating from the UAE and also provide a common platform for interaction within the industry.” Joining hands with the existing Marine Associations in the country and opening up a forum for every industry within the shipping community to express their views at the national level is the first step in this direction.

What are the plans of the UAE Shipping Association to promote the UAE shipping industry economically and politically?

• To promote and understanding between shipping industries of various countries by way of freight tax agreements/ exemptions / mutual co-operation on freight / port related matters.

• To obtain the government support / banks co-operation in UAE to develop ship owning, ship operation and related industries by encouraging local business community.

Will there be changes to the board to reflect the broader membership panel?

No changes have been discussed presently. However, we do not rule out the possibility of a reorganization to ensure adequate representation of the entire community.

And finally whom can our readers contact if they wish to obtain further information or a membership application?

For any further information on the Association, please contact us on admin@uaesoa.ae.
