After the Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone Authority had previously stopped issuing new licenses under the highly popular flexi – scheme, it now has decided to continue the offer. Under the flexi scheme investors are able to establish a company for relatively little money and without the necessity of renting a physical office. At the same time they are eligible to a limited number of residence visas under that company (one or two visas only). The scheme is a highly popular alternative for start ups and small consultancy businesses that operate on a home office basis even in Dubai. Special business centre services even allowed for such set up to be registered under a Dubai PO Box address. Previously the Authority had stopped the service entirely, allegedly in a bid to attract more physical business to Ras Al Khaimah. The easing of the restrictions may be due to a reverse tendency in general that saw other free zones like Hamriya, SAIF-Zone or Virtu-Zone coming up with comparable schemes to fill the void.
